Today’s recommended read is a short story. The Night Beat is written by crime author Harry Bingham. The story follows a new police officer, Fiona Griffiths, on her first night patrol in Cardiff, South Wales. Fiona’s appearance is slight and her patrol partner questions whether she is too naive, and perhaps not up for the job.
Fiona’s appearance is slight for an officer. She seems timid and out of her depth so her patrol partner starts to question whether her actions and naivety could mean she is not up for the job.
As the evening goes on Bryan ‘Sgt. Clint’ Jenkins is proved wrong and has to admit that perceptions and reality do not always tally.
It is not only Fiona’s colleague who questions her capabilities, the evening revelers also have a hard time taking her seriously. It is not until the evening ends in violence that those who doubt Fiona are proved wrong.
This is a quick read which gives the reader a taste of an addictive series featuring a determined female police officer. It is the perfect introduction to a six book series that will appeal to readers who enjoy reading about a quirky protagonist and appreciate the language of a true wordsmith.
I am now enjoying Talking to the Dead, the first book in the series and am quite taken in by Fiona Griffiths unique style of policing.
Definitely worth a read especially if you are on the look out for a new and original crime series to curl up with while you hibernate this Autumn.
